A Speedy Slovak Snack: Cheesy Garlic Puff Pastry Swirls (Cesnakov é Slim áky)

Detail

Need a garlic fix, fast? These Slovak cheesy garlic swirls are your answer. Using ready-made puff pastry, they're the perfect speedy, savory snack for unexpected guests or parties. Utterly addictive and packed with garlic goodness!

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet (approx. 10-14 oz or 275-400g) of ready-rolled puff pastry.
  • 5 oz (150g) cream cheese or other soft, spreadable cheese, softened.
  • 4-6 cloves Garlic, minced or pressed (or more, to taste!.)
  • 5 oz (100g) hard cheese (like Eidam, Gouda, or Cheddar), grated.
  • 1 Egg, beaten, for egg wash.
  • 1 tsp Caraway seeds or sesame seeds for topping (optional.)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.

Instructions

1. Preheat and Prepare

Preheat your oven to 390°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Make the Filling

In a small bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, minced garlic, and about two-thirds of the grated hard cheese. Season with salt and pepper and mix until well combined.

3. Assemble the Swirls

Unroll the puff pastry sheet onto your work surface. Spread the garlic-cheese mixture evenly over the entire surface of the pastry, leaving a small border along one of the longer edges. Sprinkle the remaining grated cheese over the top.

4. Roll and Slice

Tightly roll the pastry up from the long edge, finishing with the clean border to help seal it. Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into individual swirls, about 0.5-0.75 inches (1.5-2 cm) thick.

5. Bake

Carefully place the swirls cut-side down on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between them. Brush the tops and sides with the beaten egg and sprinkle with caraway or sesame seeds, if using. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the swirls are puffed up, golden brown, and crisp.

6. Serve

Let the swirls cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet before transferring them to a wire rack. They are best served warm.
